Default 1250 assemble woes part # 2 Hydro trans

Before I assembled the 1250 I picked up in pieces, I noticed that the trunion was warn badly. I welded it up and gridned/filed back to spec. I installed new springs and end caps. I also installed shims to tighten the plates. I also drained the fluid, cleaned the inside the best I could and I put new Hytran and filter. I drove the tractor around a bit and noticed that it speeds up a bit going down hill but slows down a lot going up hill. Also, the hydro sounds noisy to me. It only makes noise when theres a lot on it tho. Is this sound normal? Also, what else could be causing it slow under load?

And I thought a wide frame hydro tractor would be less trouble than my old narrow frame gear drive tractors. LOL

Chris it should speed up and slow down going up and down hills. The hydrostactic isn't cruise control and it's normal for that to happen. What did the rest of the rear oil look like?

The only time a hydro is going to run a speed consistently is on level ground, otherwise you have to adjust the lever to maintain speed just as you would with a gas pedal in a car. Hydro's tend to be noisy, but very dependable.

Thanks for the replies. The oil looked good when I drained it, however the oil filter was dry. I have no idea how long this tractor sat as the previous ower broke a rod and gave it to the guy I picked it up from. Before pulling the oil filter I removed the back cover and drained the fluid out with the front pointed up. I'm hoping this explains the dry filter.

As for the speed changes, going down hill it only slows a little, but going up hill it almost comes to a stop. I have to push the control a lot and the hydro whines a lot. Much more than my brothers 127. Next time he complains about it I'll let him use this 1250. I'm sure that will shut him up.

I double checked the control plates and it looks like I need to add more shims as there is still some side to side movement. I hope this will fix a lot of the speed changes.

As for the whining, do you think draining the oil out like I did caused the pump to go dry? Would it need to be primed? If so, how?

Thanks again for all of the help.

Chris

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
