Default First Cub Cadet

Hello, This is my first post, although I have been reading here for awhile trying to decide which model Cub I wanted to buy. I was holding out for a diesel but came across this 2072 for $350 and couldn't pass it up. It's going to take some work to get it going. I just got it home tonight and threw a battery in it to see if the electrical was good but the starter wouldn't engage so that will be first. I see a burn't mark above the batteries positive post so I am guessing someone closed the seat with a battery charger attached and burned something up. Headlights and oil light come on when I turn the ignition switch to the first position then the headlights go out at the second position. Ill have to search for a wiring harness and get acquainted.

That part should be normal. While the tractor is running, you would turn the key back a position to turn the lights on, I believe.

Not 100% sure, as my 1782 actually has another switch..To give power to the lights.

Nice 2072. You'd better be paranoid cause you did steal that tractor!! The cops are probably gonna be knocking at your door. The ignition switch is correct. From left it should be off/run with headlights/run without headlights/start. Hopefully its just an electrical gremlin causing the problems. Keep us posted with your progress. Once again, SWEET tractor and an even SWEETER deal.

Well so much for being a thief. I started pulling the tins off it this morning and discovered the starter hung up on the flywheel so I grabbed the flywheel and gave it a spin and it spun freely, too freely. The sound of marbles in the crankcase made my heart sink. A quick look at the case confirmed it. Looks like I'm in search of a M20S shortblock.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
