Default saved a 1541 today

Hi all I was at the scrapyard today after cleaning up my yard and a guy was bringing in a 1541 with three point hitch in to scrap it. I went over to talk to him because I had never seen one and am a tractor fan (currently restoring a ih Bn) and found out it ran just had caught fire. It had burnt up the hood, left side and headlights. I ended up trading him a equal amount of scrap for it. Got it home and it will start if you jump the solenoid but not the key. Drove it around and man does it have power. Hydraulics all work too! Now for the bad, brake pedal does not return, won't start with key and no belt for the 46 inch deck oh yeah hood and sides are melted along with some wiring. I don't think it was that bad of a deal since it was less then a hundred bucks. Pics will come tomorrow. Are service manuals available for this? I can't find that much about this tractor were they any good?

I have one and it was a great mower until the governor broke. It has the good driveline and a Kohler Mag 18 HP engine. The plastic panels are junk but overall it's a good machine.

Thank you all. The plastic panels are all melted so they were truly junk anyway. So far governor seems good but if it dies i may repower. Did they make a rear pto that will fit on these? Also brake pedal won't return? Anyone have a diagram that shows the pedal assembly?

Todd

You said “The plastic panels are junk”

I respectfully disagree. The plastic doesn’t rattle or rust. Down side is you can’t run into trees with it LOL

Default Service Bulletin 246

KindaPointless: I would heartily recommend pinning the governor shaft before anything happens to it. Kohler put out a Service Bulletin 246 issued in April 1998 that shows how to pin the shaft so that it doesn't back out, letting the governor fall into the engine.

Kohler says that it shouldn't happen if the engine doesn't overheat, but given all the factors which can affect an engine, why take the chance? When the governor lets go, it usually takes the engine with it, or at least major portions of it.

The Service Bulletin may be available on this site, if you can't find it; I'll send you a PDF.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
