Got 2072 out of storage a couple weekends ago and slowly weve been tuning it up. We took the carb off and cleaned it but when we re installed it the motor fired up fine and then with anything more then 1/3 throttle it ran away like the governor was not working. I then read that since we disconnected the linkage the governor cross shaft would need to be reset in the clamp on the cross shaft.
Here lies the problem I put pliers and turned counter clockwise like the manuals say on the cross shaft but i do not get any resistance from it. It moves about a 3/4 turn either way but there is no resistance. I can however feel it connecting at either end of the turn inside with something, it doesn't just spin away freely. There is also some vertical movement in the shaft. We also played with the throttle linkage to no avail. I am tearing my hair out because when we parked the machine in storage it worked fine and now seeing as it might be an internal problem it looks like the whole motor needs to be torn down possibly.Just curious if anyone here might have some other hints. THANK YOU!! |

Set it per the manual. You won't feel any resistance with the engine shut of.

if you're sure you set it correctly and it still don't work I'd have to say you'll have to take it apart. you didn't twist on the governor arm shaft to hard did you? there's a paddle on the shaft that contacts the riser controlled by the weights and it don't take much to damage them. I've had a number of the KT's where the governor fell off the shaft it rides on and came through the block so be carful.

3/4 turn on the governor stop shaft sounds like too much. I don't think you should be able to turn it that much. Iv'e only rebuilt 2 of them (m20's) but I don't remember getting more than a 1/4 turn out of it.

Sounds like the plastic gear is broken. Looks like it's time to split it apart.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
