Default Head studs

I feel like I should know this, but I don't like the way my head studs look. I ran the studs in all the way, installed the heavy washers, then nuts, then the spacers. My gas tank support doesnt sit down as low as I think it should, and it runs a little up hill toward the front. See attached pictures. I ran across a really good thread a week or two ago that showed the different head and shield designs and the proper hardware for each+ but I cannot find it now. Wish I had snapped some before pictures prior to disassembly.

The original head should have high bosses and use no studs.the tank bracket is bolted down to the head using head bolts.

I cant speak to what the engine came off of as I bought the engine after it had been pulled. It did come complete with the head and tank/bracket shown.

Then you need to shorten the studs or they will hit the tank. A tank bracket from a later cub may be taller in the back.I will see if I can get some pics.

cut the rear mounting holes at the bottom so they're slots instead of round holes then the bracket will be higher in the back.install flat washers to hide the slots..the older engines that had the high bosses on the head tend to warp and the bosses fold over and won't stay tight.[the high boss head is no longer available].the low boss head and stud package is the replacement that fixes this problem ...make sure you torque the nuts against the head with flat washers then spacers then tank bracket and make sure the studs have clearance at the tank or they will damage the tank...the tin over the head also came with the new head kit which came with all the studs,nuts,spacers etc. it's the same tin that came on 108/128 engines

Just a thought but aren't the spacers two different lengths? It seems that I noticed this on hhd 301..perhaps I'm mistaken though...
