Try another plug.

I did use another plug. Same thing. When I attach the tester to the plug wire and then ground it to the engine, the tester lights up like crazy. When I replace the tester with a know good plug and ground the plug to the cylinder head, I get nothing. ??????

Since this K91 is not on a Cub Cadet product, there is little known about it. The Kohler Engines of that era could have two Ignition Systems - (A) Magneto, or (B) Battery. Which one do you have...???

the metal or threaded part of the plug has to be touching a ground like a head bolt or cooling fin

It's a magneto system. I did try to ground the plug on the cylinder head and got nothing. I took the plug out of the engine in question and put it in a know good engine and got great spark. I really don't think its the plug. I think it may have a weak spark. It's strong enough to light the tester but not enough to fire the plug.

a weak spark is possible, it don't take much to light a light. the spark tester I have has a 1/4 in gap to jump. it cracks when it sparks

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
