Here is the deal, got an 1861 (MTD) that needs some work. One of the jobs that I have in mind for this tractor in the future is to move a trailer into a tight area that a tow pig isn't going to get....
I hear stories of people using small tractors to push their boat and trailer around. However, before I go to doing a lot of work on this tractor and fab-n up a hitch with a 2 5/8? inch ball, I'd like a little real World advice from the professionals here.... How much tongue weight is this tractor going to safely handle?, I assume it is better to have hitch on rear, versus front of tractor, is this correct? Anyone here use a Cub to move a trailer? Does it work well? Advice?, pics of your hitch? Most of the time, my trailer will be just an empty dual axle 16 foot trailer, but since I use this trailer as a pick up truck that I don't have, there might be times where there is a load of one sort or another on it. ![]() |

You won't have any trouble with what you want to do as long as your not on the side of a hill where the breaks won't hold what your pulling. Use common sence. Ive had a hitch on a 108 and pulled a 16' trailer all over my 30 acres and even in some halloween & christmas parades loaded with kids (NO HILLS). I now have the same hitch on my 582 special that moves my 18' with no problem. For the bigger jobs I have a reese reciever welded on a plate thats bolted to the back of my 2284. It works real well. Like I said, Use your head and some common sence in what your doing and you'll be fine.
I will add that I have Wheel Weights on all my tractors. Some have 2 sets on each wheel.

I have a 2084 that I have hooked into my 16 foot fiberglass boat with a 55 horse outboard. I can pull that boat anywhere except up a steep grade.

Heres a couple pics of my hitch's, nothing fancy, just functional. The back end is the working end of a tractor and thats where the hitch go's. I wouldn't put anything on the front and take a chance on bumping the plastic. I hope this helps you! Good Luck!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
