Hello. I am looking for a shop or person in NE Illinois (NW suburbs of Chicago)who appreciates these machines and knows how to work on them. I have a Model 71 that needs a new head gasket, lights hooked up, and a tune-up, but I can't find any "small engine" shop willing to work on them. I have the head gasket and tune up parts.

You can do all that yourself for much cheaper and all it takes is a basic toolset. Do some searching on here and it will tell you every bit of how to do it. Its not a hard job to do at all. The only special tool yu will need is a torque wrench . And hose can be had fairly cheap

Thanks everyone for the replies and the confidence boost. I take care of simple stuff like changing spark plugs, oil and such, but I'll give it a try. I'll probably be back with some questions.

Read a lot, download the manual/service manual and read some more; do a forum search for related questions and read about those, and then finally ask questions that come up. You should do fine IMO; that method seems to work for me.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
