Default K161 engine problems

I bought an original from a guy who said he had the enginie built by a machine shop. So I put points in and coil and rebuilt the carb and try starting it. Its fireing fine...has compression but will not start. It backfires through the exhaust occasionally but will not run. Any ideas or help would be appreciated.

I would check the timing. Not sure if the k161 is the same as a k301 but if you look in the flywheel sight hole on a k301 for the timing marks you should see an S as the points just begin to break open. Did the po ever have it runing after the the overhaul? Check your points again too be sure they didn't move on you. Others on here know alot more than I do and am sure they can help you more. Hope this helps you out some!

I set the points useing a volt meter and by turning the flywheel to the SP mark. The engine hasn't ran since the rebuild. I'm just wondering if the valve lash is correct?

I would have to check the manual but I'm pretty sure those had an ignition advance on them. otherwise known as a 2 piece cam. could be 180 deg out of time.

Problem Solved......It was the valve to tappet clearence. Who ever put the engine together installed new intake and exhaust valve but never checked the clearence between the valves and the tappets. I ended up grinding off about .022 off of each valve to get it to the proper spec. After that..SHAZAMM..It ran like a top. Kinda scares me a bit...supposedly this engine was proffesionaly built...makes me wonder what else they didn't check??

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
