My older Cub Cadet GT2550 is having problems keeping its battery charged up, so I ordered a new 12V Battery from the official Cub Cadet website. It arrived via mail in a DRY condition. The local Cub Cadet dealer won't put electrolyte in it because of "liability" issues, and I'm having trouble finding a local auto parts dealer who sells electrolyte acid solution.
I went to the local AutoZone store, and the technician there claims that one doesn't NEED to get electrolyte solution -- only Distilled Water. He said that the electrolyte acid simply makes it easier and faster to do the initial charging of the battery. Using ONLY Distilled Water will work (he claims), but that the initial charge will take longer to accomplish. Does this sound correct? It sounds like to me. I want to have a RELIABLE, fully-functional battery and don't want to take shortcuts. I have a gallon of Distilled Water and my own battery trickle-charger, but do I NEED the electrolyte? If so, who will sell it to me? Any help or tips would be appreciated. Thank you. |

Proof that sometimes going with genuine cub cadet parts isn't the way to go.
Return it and just buy an off the shelf battery

I really don't want to return it -- I just want to get the battery operational. Isn't there some simple way to get this going?

Its been a very, very, verrry, long time since I bought a dry battery, but everyone I have ever bought came with the soluution.I simply added the electrolyte solution (acid) and charged the battery.Make sure your charger is on the two amp setting as those small batteries can be damaged using anything higher. As for me I would have went to a local battery specialist or auto parts store and bought a really good quality battery and a battery tender. The ones I have are 2-3 yrs old and still in good condition and I attribute that to the battery tenders.Just my two cents:GoodLuck

Have you tried your local Napa or other auto parts store they might have the solution, otherwise I have heard great things about Napa brand batteries one that a guy still uses and it's 10 years old I have one but it's new so I can't brag it up yet, much easier to buy a ready battery in my opinion

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
