Question 1641 problem

Just found this site today and joined hoping maybe I can get some questions answered. I have a 1641 cub that last season quit running, it stopped instantly as I was just running along the driveway. The pto was not engaged at the time and the only thing I could think of was that something internal in the engine broke that would cause it to stop that sudden, also when trying to start it, it will not even turnover. I hope maybe someone has a suggestion as to what I might check to confirm if it is the engine or something else. Thank you

Let's see:

1) How many hours on the machine?

2) Have you checked all electrical connections to make sure something didn't short out/come disconnected?

3) Have you drained the oil? If not, I'd do so and look for metal flakes OR

4) Try turning the engine by hand via the drive shaft.

4.5) When it stopped running, did you hear any unusual noises or did it literally just...STOP...?

5) If it won't even crank over, being able to turn the engine only tells us that it turns free, that more or less points the problem to electrical. Again, check for frayed wires, clean all your grounds/connections you can get to. Also, make sure all your safety switches are intact and hooked up properly.

I'll bet it's something simple, these machines are generally pretty solid and don't usually just stop dead in there tracks for no reason. I'm sure others will chime in with other useful suggestions, those are just the first that came to mind.

I also have a 1641. A few years ago mine stopped.... right NOW! PTO locked up. You stated yours wasn't engaged so maybe that eliminates it, but it wouldn't be too big of a deal to check it just in case.....

If the engine quit running you need to check for spark,fuel,and air. If the engine will not turn over you need to rotate the engine by hand in both directions to see if it is free or locked up. Check that and tell us what you find and we can go from there.

I bought this one a couple year ago because the motor was bad, turned out to be a seized up bearing in the PTO. Take the PTO off it first and see if it will run.

the tractor has 900hrs. on it. it was running great right up to the point that it stopped dead as if I ran into a cement wall. I would like to know how it would act if the the pto does seize. Also how do I eliminate the pto as the cause of the stoppage.

I disconnected the driveshaft after this happened to try and turn over the engine and it would not budge. Do I have to remove the nut on the front of the pto to remove it and do I need to use a puller on it?

Yes, pull the bolt on the center of the PTO. Take the brake off, and it should pull off fairly easily. Might be a little stuck, but usually a hammer handle or mallet will make it move. Don't know if I ever had to use a puller, but hey, there's a first time for everything.

Edit: I'm not sure that you have to take the brake off on that one. Just went and looked at the parts book. Been a while since I pulled a PTO like that one.
