putting a K321 together this morning. checked ring end gap. alls well. put the rings on the piston and gee? the second ring won't fit in the groove. so in a panic I thought "O gee what to do?" My first thought was to run to my computer and ask for HELP! but after I calmed down I said "no, I can do this" so I consulted with the Bob the Builder talking action figure (not a doll) that I keep in my shop. We then continued to measure the ring thickness and the piston ring groove. MMMmm . the ring is .012 thicker than the groove? so I say to Bob the Builder talking action figure "should we go ask what to do now on the internet?" Bob says We can fix it. OK, so looking at the old piston I measure the groove and ring and goo ahaha. wrong ring. so that motor won't go anywhere today. so then I take a file and start filing parts till they fit. so then I put the piston in the ring compressor. I had to use a 4 lb hammer to get that thing in the bore! now it won't turn over! so I get my valve lapping compound and a 4 foot bar. I coat the bore with lapping compound and start barring it over till it spins pretty free. now I finally get it running and it smokes bad. I mean real bad. I wonder what could have gone wrong ? so I drain out half the oil and add some 80-90 gear lube. it don't smoke as bad but now I gots all kinds o smoke coming out o the breather. so I welded the breather vent shut so you don't see the smoke coming out. now it use's a qt of oil every half hour. am I going to have to take this apart again?

I bet it's just a valve seal. That's probably why it's burning oil. Yep. Didn't replace the seals did you......

J-Mech; (hanging head in shame) yes , I reused the valve guide seals. is that a bad thing?

I have a strange sense of humor. I wasn't going to put the disclaimer on the bottom but I didn't want anyone to think I'm dumberer than I really am.

Thats a good one, especially the 80-90 part. Which I can relate to, back in the late 50's my Grandfather owed a Texaco station. Had a Guy bring in a 1954 Ponitac with a straight 8 flattie engine and stated it had an engine knock and ask Grandpa to check it out. Grandpa fired her up and sure enough from the deep and low sound, rod knocking. He put it on the lift and pulled the oil drain plug, look like molass'es trying to run out, come to find out, the Guy had put 70W gear grease in the oil to take the knock away, said it worked for about a week.
