I've been abusing one of my 149's this summer tilling up some new ground for a new garden. I could get the whole garden tilled, and have thoughts of going back to the barn when it would shut down. It's done it before and after waiting for it to cool down it would start right up and I would be able to drive it to the barn. Yesterday after letting it sit for quite awhile I tried starting it, and heard some strange noise and after looking around the engine, found air coming from under the head and said to myself, ok the head gasket's gone. So I unhooked the tiller, and towed the cub to the barn, and parked it. Today I took the head off and sure enough the gasket was blown out in one spot. I took the gasket off and looked at the cylinder to see if any other damage had been done, and it looked ok, then I turned the head over and found this.
On a side note, every bolt on the head was so loose I could take them out using my fingers. I have another cub that's been used as a doner, and I took the head from it, and hopefully it will work on the other one.

If you are in for a little more power, you could take this head and have it shaved .040" - .050" to bump up the compression a little. Care should be taken to verify that valve clearance isn't a problem. Ideally, some carb, cam and valve mods would be in order, too, but even without that, this will help a little. If I did this, I would bump the timing to maybe 22* and readjust the carb to match. This is not a full fledged performance upgrade, but you should see a small increase in HP and probably a decrease in fuel consumption. The increased compression makes the combustion slightly more efficient. The drawback is that it may kick a little more against the starter at cranking speeds. I just thought that would be one way to salvage the head. Otherwise, don't throw it away, because, I was thinking of doing some mods to my engine anyway and may be interested in that head.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
