That 1864 was made in 1995.

As for the rear end fluid, use a reputable fluid of your choice; Hytran is always a top choice but there are other brands out there that are cheaper that work with zero issues. Please do a search of the forums for more info on fluid, that is a huge debate here that we'd all rather not get into again.

Edit: Got any pics?

I have been using the Traveller brand sold at Tractor Supply for years on both John Deere and CC with no issues. Here is their link for 5 gallons for $40.
http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/stor...ic-fluid-5-gal
It meets all the requirements for both HyTran and Hyguard.

Good stuff, it's what I and many others use. But again, the "which fluid to use" fluid question will get into a debate as usual.

Here's several links for those that can't search:

Man! Just reading those old links about hydraulic fluid shows that there is still strong opinions out there. My theory is that when I look at all of the tractors across America and I ask myself what most of them use I realize that most are like me and want something that will do the job at the best price and not cost me in the long run. I believe that when any product has been on the market for a long period of time without any customer negative feedback then it must be doing the job. Of course every manufacturer recommends their own brand. Ever noticed the manual of ANY new car? But we all know that we use what is available and has a good reputation. So for me I use TSC Travellers because many of the big farmers around here use it and it is a good price. As for the old CC lasting another 30 years I can only guess because I won't be here!

I suppose it's the same with the oil you use in your car, etc.
I've used Hytran because that's what was suggested by others but I'm also not emotionally tied to an oil. If the TSC stuff will do the job and it has the history to validate it,,,,why wouldn't we use it?
I know I just paid $23 a gallon for Hytran an I have no idea if it's the same stuff that came in my 1864 when it was new, or my 127 or my 149, etc.
I'm really not overly concerned about paying just over $50 for a hydro service with a new filter every so many years....BUT, it would be good to know that the TSC hydro fluid is just as good for a lot less money, sort of like taking generic drugs, they're all supposed to be the same chemically.
I guess all this is leading to my actual question....
If the TSC is the same chemically, why shouldn't I use it. No I haven't been through all those links and I'll probably be told to do so. I just thought I would ask from a non-emotional, just the facts Jack, point of view...For you older members, just like Joe Friday would have said.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
