Default Getting the 1872 going

So I got this 1872 about a month ago, and since i'll be at home for a while I'm going to tinker with it here and there. A little background on the tractor...Guy that owned it did "something" and broke bolts in the rear end, causing a hydraulic line to start leaking, and bent the driveshaft. He then brings it to the repair shop to fix said problems except for the rear end bolts, which he said he'd take care of himself. Fast forward...the shop "finishes" the repairs and calls the gentlemen to tell him it's ready to be picked up. When the shop tells him the price the man gets outraged and basically says screw you. Keep the tractor and do whatever you want with it! Fast forward a year and I come into the picture and pick the tractor up for $450. Well today I actually look at it a little and here is what I found.

Since the shaft coming out of the pump is splined, taking all the strain, is the cotter pin the correct fastener in this location?


Notice the 2 nylon lock nuts barely hand tight on the driveshaft coupler. Keep in mind, the shop said all repairs were "complete."

I don't think this tractor has ever been even rinsed off. The crud on the rear end is about 1/4 to 1/2" deep everywhere.


Can someone tell me what these brackets would be for?

Umm seeing as I how I have no experience with the model the OP has, someone please tell me this can't be stock!



Otherwise, nice machine to start with! I'm not sure I'd trust that machine shop in the future, however. I'd start by tightening the drive shaft bolts up and going from there. How many hours? How's it run?

I hope you can make this a good worker again

Cotterpin should be a Roll pin or spiral pin. That is bound to cause shaft and/or pump problems

Won't be taking it to any shop. I drove 3 hours one way to pick it up. The guy that originally owned the tractor lived in texas. The shop was 5 miles from the Oklahoma/Texas border. Haven't got it running yet. Can't lift more than 10 lbs right now because of the surgery, so I'm pretty much just tinkering slowly and easily. It wouldn't turn over fast enough with my charger on the 100 amp start setting, but the battery in it is from '07 and toast. Maybe i'll put another battery in it tomorrow if I can talk my wife into carrying it over. Gotta get the rear end cleaned and see what I'm really working with so I can see what I need to do to save it. I'm hoping just some Sam Mac braces will do the trick.

The Brown bracket is an anchor plate that some attachments use on the supers. Haban 60 in deck and 54 inch blade are a few.

That makes sense. I sold the subframe off of it, because I didn't have the deck. I was told the subframe was for the haban 60". So I can take those off since I will be putting a 50" deck on it. How's your 1872 treating you timbo?

Love my 1872, my first tractor 4 years ago and got me hooked. It's been the lead worker til this year for both grass and pushing snow. Giving it some tlc this summer.

But I'll be laid up myself after my own surgery next Friday. I Tore my left bicep tendon so a month in a cast and months of light duty after. Bummer not much tractor work for awhile.

Good luck with your super they are worth it.

1st a good cleaning
2nd take a good look at the transmission mounts I see loose axle tube bolts in your pic.
3rd drive shaft needs some TLC

Make sure you get that JD filter off of it. Put a CC filter on it and it might heal it's self
