Looks like the PO used 2 head gaskets. The head bolts didn't seem very tight either but this is the first time I've removed one. Tons of leakage on the exhaust side.
I'll assume from this that 2 head gaskets is a bad idea. gonna clean it up and try to sand down and level the head. ![]() ![]()

yeah the list of PO mods is pretty long on this one, some to be expected since its a replacement engine but some of this I don't quite understand.
It did start and run though. Check out this throttle/Gov setup. no linkage, no spring. It's on the list, pacing myself.

![]() ![]() Is there any trick to getting the block side surface that smooth? How do you keep crud out of the cylinder bore while cleaning block and piston?

You need to keep sanding on the head. It's not flat yet.
I put the piston up toward the top and clean with a die grinder with a 3m roloc disc. (See pic) You can get them from parts stores..... sometimes. Then when done, clean off with brake cleaner and blow the bore out with compressed air. Spray brake cleaner in the bore if necessary, then blow it out again. 3M-7524.jpg |

I'll sand the head some more. Is 150 grit too coarse? I've been using 220. Here are some pics. first time working on Valves. Lapping the valves: ![]() Magnet was a big help getting the keepers back on:
