I found a 1862 for sale. The owner says the over speed governor needs to be repaired/replaced. I'm not sure what all would be involved in fixing it. I'm assuming it has a Kohler Command in it, I haven't seen it or talked to the guy yet. Anyone have any advice on this?

It has a Kohler Magnum 18 engine not the command.

The govener is internal so it will require some disassembly of the engine, I'm not sure how far it will have to come apart but someone with more experience with the new engines will have that answer.

I've seen more of the Mag18's with broken governor gears than I care to see. Sometimes you can look down through the oil fill tube and see if the gear is intact.
You can download the service manual for the Mag 18-20 here http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=4648

The guy is asking $500 for it & it comes with a 54" deck that works. Any opinions on whether this might be a good venture?

A good venture? Depends on your skill. I would write off the motor IF the governor exploded and it doesn't run. Is it in good shape? Do you have pics? If the plastic, fenders, etc are in good shape, I'd take some cash and offer less; a tractor that doesn't run isn't worth much
if you can find a Command or another Mag to replace it with, it would be a good value. Otherwise, it sounds like a parts machine.

The seller of the this tractoris the same guy I just bought the 2072 from with the onan. I saw it sitting in the garage but I didn't walk in and look at it. He said it was his dad's tractor. That's about all I know about it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
