Default Possible diesel loader project: am I crazy?

I'll try to keep this brief. I've had a 1512 CC with a loader offered to me for $1100. It runs and works right now but could use a little TLC. I know off the bat that it needs:

Glow Plugs
Replace the fuel line
All fuel filters
Hydro fluid change/new filter
Coolant change
Possibly other routine Cub/Diesel maintenance

Now my conundrum comes in the form of what to do with this deal. I flat out don't have $1100 to sink into this without recouping most of it (not to mention the cost of what I'd have to do to get the thing in satisfactory running/operating condition). I do have a local Cub friend who is big into the 82 series Cubs and wants a diesel. I want the loader. I'm sure you can all see where I'm going with this.

Am I crazy for wanting to get this, remove the loader, and sell the tractor to recoup most of my investment? Part of the deal with my friend getting the 1512 is he'd be helping me swap the loader between machines and fab anything we'd need (he has a better shop than I with all the necessary tools). I'm not 100% sure how the loader hydraulics are powered so that's a mystery at the moment.

Guess I'm just looking for some other guys on this one. I hate to send the diesel down the road but for this to work, that's what I'd have to do. And then getting the loader to work on the 2284, that's another hurdle.

Below are the pics I have on the machine at this time. Click on them to see them full size.

Decent looking setup, it's not a 1512, it's a 1572 SGT. So you shouldn't have a issue swapping the loader. I've never seen that model loader before, looks like it was made for a normal GT, sounds like a very good price.

I believe it's a home made loader but I'm not 100% sure. Been too long since I was told

BTW good catch on the 1572 vs 1512. My mistake; I knew better but for some reason had 1512 on the brain

I always tell myself when I see a deal like this come up I won't hesitate yet here I am. The thing is, I always told myself I'd sell my 2284 in a heartbeat for something like this but I have fallen for the 2284 and now can't bring myself to get rid of it. Didn't see that one coming.

That's my thought; it does run (I've seen video of it running and even lifting the rear end of an 1811 with the loader) so that is a big mark in the plus column. Worst case, I can sell the 1572 for more than I paid for the whole setup. Just don't tell anybody

What am I missing? Why not sell the 2284? Then all you'd have to do is the maintanence on the diesel, nothing to fab.

Yep, I was thinking the same thing or I would sell some other stuff I had laying around to the 1572 with the loader and keep the other tractor. What I am also thinking you may want to mow without having a loader.

I'm at the point where I've put enough time, money, and work into the 2284 that I don't want to get rid of it. She's more than earned her keep.

As for the diesel maintenance, I don't know if that'd cost me $100 or $500. I've seen/heard it run, but know that a lot of basic stuff has to be done to it before I'd consider it a solid runner.

I'm all for selling other stuff I have laying around but I don't really have much laying around any more! I sold my Swisher trail mower for a good price but used that to fund new rubbers for the 2284. Other than that, I'm not getting rid of my 1864, cab, blower, blade, etc. Too many toys, not enough money!

As for mowing with a loader, that's a duty I'd put on the 1864. That way, I don't need to mow with a loader

Looks pretty decent to me, hope you can figure out how to make the deal work. As far as putting the loader on the 2284, it should fit just fine, the frames are the same. You may need to play with what ever it has for a pump drive.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
