2003 cub cadet 2166, purchased new, serviced by me at intervals. Problem is deck blades work somewhat ok in short grass at level 3, taller grass blades want to stop turning. If I raise the deck to 5 or above blades almost stop completely. The pto drive belt is new, deck belt is 1 year old looks new, bearings all look good, both pulleys under pto clutch relaced, springs not broken. I changed the rear tires from 20x9x8 to 20x8x8,they were free. Deck is pretty level, yes I know the front should be 1/8 to 1/4 lower.
Question is can the tire change cause this because of the angle?? |

The only thing you changed on the tires is the width. That shouldnt have any affect on this issue.

In my case if you set those tires next to each other the 20x8x8 is shorter. After replacing the tires I could no longer cut at level 2 had to use level 3.

Forgot to mention when lifting the deck you can see the deck belt loosen. Pto belt stays tight. With the deck all the way up you can move the blade and the belt stays still. If you try and move the blade backwards then then the belt gets tight. I have never seen anything like this. I can start by process of elimination and put the original tires back on but what a pain.

I see two problems:
![]() (A) The belt tension-er is not working correctly (B) You have the wrong PTO drive belt (C) or both.

Pto belt purchased from cub cadet dealer,Zimmer Tractor, even asked if I wanted a cheaper kevlar belt and I said no. 954-3055A
Belt tensioner I assume you mean the springs. The deck is completely apart at this time. Everything seems normal. No way to tell if the springs are weak. This thing sure has me baffled. I work on just about anything for friends and family but unfortunately this is my own. |

YUP.....954-3055A seems to be the correct Drive Belt.
How about some pictures starting with the PTO, Mule Drive Pulleys and finally the Center Deck Pulley as far as "belt routing".

Repaired. The pto belt was correct, deck belt was not. That's what happens when you buy from discount stores and after market products.
If you put 954-3073 in search all kinds of deals show up. Only problem is the one I bought, last year, stated it was a replacement for it. "75-659--- 1/2x62-3/8 Inch Replacement Belt for Cub Cadet 954-3073". This belt is 1/2x62-3/8. Inch and half too long. Hope this helps anybody in the future. Sorry for wasting everybody's time. Thanks for the replies. I still don't understand this but cub dealer sold me pto belt for $33.00 and just bought deck belt for $34.00. PTO belt is 5/8x112" and the deck belt 1/2x61". Half as long and more money???? |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
