Hi,
The last time I mowed, I noticed the tractor gradually losing power. I talked to my repair man and he suggested that the engine sounded fine (heard it over the phone while I was working with it) but that possibly the governor is not working correctly. All the linkages, etc. seem to be working as they should as well as the choke mechanism and throttle. He suggested running it at full throttle while mowing, so I did that and it worked fine. But now today it seemed to be doing the same thing - a constant change in rpm while I had it idling before shutting it off. I could see the governor arm moving back and forth even though I was not doing any throttle adjustments. Any ideas? Thanks, Keith |

Check idler screw and main fuel jet screw settings on your carb and adjust them accordingly. Check fuel filter or petcock and fuel system for dirt or clog. Check linkage of throttle for loose items (such as bushing in carb) and obstructions, like is the fuel line interfering with the throttle linkage.
BTW: These engines are air cooled and you should always mow at WOT to maximize your engine life. Hope that helps you target/troubleshoot. Cub Cadet 123

Sounds like the governor is chasing. As if it's a lean condition. Like CC123 points out, check fuel flow and adjustments.

Your engine is "hunting" it is looking for the "sweet spot".
I personally would start with properly adjusting the governor, not because I think that's the problem but because you don't want to go through a bunch of work and later find out that the governor is part of the problem and have to do the work all over again. The guys are exactly right, do what they have told you and you should be able to find the problem.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
