Fun With A CC Beast In Virginia
A friend gave me a Cub Cadet HDS 3185 last winter because it wouldn't start and made a funny noise. He's not into things technical. Got it running quickly - had 400 hours - and was impressed with the weight and strength of the unit... Just what I needed to mow grass beside my mile long drive. (I bushhog with a farm tractor now, but it doesn't look too good. The tractor did make a bang sound when running and I foolishly let my wife test it out before I pulled it back into the shop for a look. It was the drive shaft and it let go and bent the shaft and - most unfortunately - the flywheel fan. Parts folks sell everything except that fan. So I am exploring and calling around hoping to find one. It is a solid, impressive tractor and I'd like to get it back to as-new and use it for years. My dad liked Cub Cadets and his one sure looks really good... But for my stupidity in not investigating the noise just a little sooner. Ideas and input most welcome.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
