Can I take the worm shaft out of a John Deere 3 turn steering gear and use it in a Cub Cadet standard old 2 turn gear box? The JD ones are easier to find.

I'm not sure..... but I was thinking that the shaft was a bit longer from a Deere.

a good machinist could cut the worm gear off the jd shaft and weld it on the cub shaft.

Thanks for the replies so far.
The longer length should not be a big problem. I have several "super steer" axles to use in tractors and I read that they need the 3 turn steering gear to utilize their full potential. Further input is appreciated. Thank You,and have a great day!!!!

As far as shortening the shaft, for what it does, and slow operation,
If it were me, I'd shorten it near the upper end maybe 6" down and "V" it out good, lay it in a 'V" block or angle iron and tack it, insure it is straight and weld it. If it is a little off you can straighten it easily @ that length. Also there is enough clearance in the nylon/plastic upper bushing to not cause a problem of slight misalignment. No rocket science here. I'd not do the shorting @ the worm end OR you might entertain using the complete outer tube if you find the added length suits your seating position/comfort.

I converted a box from a Cyclops a few years ago so that it would fit in a 1210. Used a Woodward C109 DD coupler to connect from the shaft on the box to the 3/4" upper shaft and a section of exhaust tube that the local muffler shop expanded one end so that it would slip over the tube on the box.

Thanks guys, for the replies. I actually do have a tilt type steering gear from a (I think) 1641. I believe I can make it work by attaching the top of the tilt extension in a fixed position. By the way,do all CCC 3 turn steering gears have the tilt feature,or are there some fixed, solid shaft types ?If so,what tractors were they used on?
What about 982's,what type steering gear did they have? I have about 5 or 6 "super steer* axles,so need to accumulate 5 or 6 3 turn steering gears. Another reason for using the JD steering from 110,112,212,214,etc is, they are non-tilt making for an easier install. So,does anyone know for a fact that the JD 3 turn worm gear shaft will fit in the CC 2 turn housing? Here is a picture of one of my tractors with a super steer axle ,still using the original CC 2 turn steering gear.

Any CCC built cub cadet after 1983? will have the 3 turn steering in it that uses the 19 1/2" long column, like an 1210-1811,680,582,1206 ect.
That is what you got if you wanted a new one for an older IH cub cadet,my 100,123,and 70 have one in them that the po's had installed from the dealer. AS for the fit ,I may come up with an answer if I still have the John Queer steering shaft, not sure ![]() Sam,I did the opposite and made a long one shorter....

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
