I've found a 1811 with 44 in. deck and 42 in. blade with 860 hrs on it. The engine has a broken governor gear. It's a clean unit. The owner wants $300.00. What do you guys think?

Sounds worth it to me provided everything is in good condition.

It's common when the governor gear goes for it to bust the block. You have to completely disassemble the motor to replace it.... the M18 probably isn't worth fixing. So, as long as your ok with getting another motor and the tractors overall condition is good, get it!

I can see the gear through oil filler tube, but it's not turning.

I dont know... how long have you been looking? If you want to tinker then sure. If you want a complete working tractor as quickly as possible then maybe look for a complete one. (and is your heart set on the 1811?)
I think a good running 1811 can be had for $400 to $600 (there are two here in NE for that, one low hour machine at $600 and one 'average' hours at $400). So assuming you can find an 'average' hour motor to put in it you would need to get it for $100 to make it worthwhile. And finding that motor might take a while, and could easily cost you $300. My experience is finding good motors without tractors attached to be tricky. So you might be in it for $600. Which would be fine. Not a bargain, but reasonable. Some time, some work involved (and that might be part of the fun of it) The other option is to wait for another one to come along that doesnt need the work. Dont know how often they come in your area and what the price is, so you have to factor that in. ![]() |

Doesn't matter. Complete disassembly is still required.

Absolut worst case if you have to do a re-power it's still a lot less than the price for a big box store disposable lawn mower and you'll have a machine that will last many years.

+1 to what they all said. The 1811 was one of the best GT's ever built.

I don't need this tractor , started out just to buy the blade for a hundred buck's, then owner offered all three pieces for 300.00.I think it would be a fun project!

All 3 pieces? What, is he considering the mower deck as a seperate piece? I guess technically it is.....

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
