Default Is This Tractor worth a rebuild?

Hi All,

I have a GT 1554. Model:14AK13BK710 Kohler engine.

1100 hours.

The engine smokes a little... mainly when under load (ie: going uphill).

Rest of tractor is in really nice clean shape.

Is this worth a top end rebuild? Or would it need more than just rings and a piston?? or-- is it better to just live with the burning oil??

ALSO: if its worth a rebuild... any guess on cost to rebuild it???

Any help is appreciated. thx!!

Courage engine, belt drive. I wouldn't bother. Money would be better spent on a shaft drive garden tractor.
You should tell Kohler you have 1100hrs on that engine. Might be a record.

Sorry My mistake. I still wouldn't rebuild a belt drive tractor.

Need some clarification on this just because. It looks to me like this model could have come with either the Courage or Command 27hp vertical shaft engine.

Obviously I would be shocked too if any Courage lasted that long so I think it's got the command but maybe OP can verify

At first I figured "the OP said the tractor is in real nice shape and if he had the ability to do it do the work himself, what the heck why not have some fun with it".

Then i looked up a rebuild kit from this guy on eBay who has pretty decent prices.....

AUDIBLE GAAASP.....

FOUR FRANKLINs and a GRANT for pistons, rings, rods, gaskets and seals for a CV25. Took the fun right out of it, OUCH!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
