Love it or hate it, there's an increase in old vehicles that have been restored mechanically but in which the weathered exterior has been stabilized and preserved but not removed.
Here's an example of the technique. The process is a wet sand using rust remover (shown in the picture) and 320 grit sanding pads. It's then washed carefully and stabilized with an application of Gibbs oil. Eastwood also makes a matte clear spray on stabilizer. I have an "O" that's beyond salvation from a finish standpoint (actually two of them). I tried this one one of the fenders and the results were remarkable . I'll try and get a picture uploaded as it's OCC and "we love pics!" . It's not for everyone but it's also an interesting option.

I like the look, not for everyone but it's a good idea.

The "Rat Rod Cub Cadet." I like the idea. Anyone have one? Post pics!
Maybe even a sub forum: Pullers, customized, implements, RAT Cubs!

I did a couple tractors including a 782 that sat out for a while using that same process. I was very pleased with the results.

Personally, I like the patina on a tractor. Shows it age and that it's worked for a living. Eventually I'd like to go through all of mine 100% mechanically, but have no intentions of painting other than to cover up rust.
I'd love to see some pics of what you've done.

This 782 sat out for a long time. I don't have any before pics, got it back in the early fall of this year. Was rusty and had algae all over, it's good enough for me, and it operates flawlessly

Go buy some red wax, it will look like a million bucks! I have a buddy that had a red mustang that was so faded that it looked pink and didn't have any shine, he used that red wax on it and it looked like a new car.

Yep, I just got a short block for my dead O, and I'm going to give it the full rat look. I too like the idea of something that's worked for a living looking like it has BUT stabilizing it so it wont rust away totally. I go to a lot of car shows and I really like those rods that are new under the hood and inside but .... "worn" outside.
It shows character, but I understand some people hate it. It's all good. I'll try and roll that cub out tomorrow and show the "pre" and "post" shot of the fender and the part of the tower when we've got sunlight. Its already getting dark and shady down here in my gulch :-) John

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
