Back to basics, figured out why 1450 ran horrible
I've been working on cars/mechanical things for 20+ years but this one had me stumped, turns out it was pretty easy. My 1450 was running like crap- it would sputter and die out had to run the choke even when warmed up, which told me it was running lean. So at first I thought I had some bad gas. Replaced the gas, rebuilt/cleaned and adjusted the carb, changed plug, points etc but it would still shut off randomly and not have much power.
Turns out, I didn't realize there was a fuel filter just beyond the fuel shut off. Unrolled it and wow there was a lot of crap in there causing a massive clog! So much so even putting 100 PSI compressed air into the other end barely blew through until I dug out the accumulation with a toothpick, then it was free flowing. Put it back together and wow, the tractor runs like a champ now  I've never experienced a fuel filter that clogged but after 40 years of accumulation I can see how it would build up.
