Good Morning Everyone,
I was able to get her back together this morning with a new fancy driveshaft(thanks Jeff) and a "new to me" flyscreen hub(thanks to Jeff as well) and new filter and fluid in the transmission. I need to adjust the transmission a bit but as it was idling i notice a metallic clank coming from the front, not sure if it is the pulley or internal. I took a short video and figured one of you may have came across this before. Please let me know if i should be concerned or i'm just being paranoid after the other recent issues, seems to go away when you increase throttle. I did just change the head gasket a couple of weeks ago. Thanks in advance for any assistance. I hope everyones Easter Sunday is going great. Does the noise go away if you engage the pto?

So I just put the deck back under it and yes when the belt is on the pulley the clank went away and the PTO functioned fine. Well except the intermittent miss of the engine but I will address that here in a minute. I never seem to get the carb set just right on the high end. Would the pressure from the belt removing the sound indicate the PTO clutch needs some love or just leave it alone for now? Thanks.

The mechanical pto clutches have a tendency to rattle, thus they come equipped with "anti-rattle springs. The rattle is usually prevalent when the pto is dis-engaged and/or there is no belt or load on the pto. The anti-rattle springs, most of the time get flung out into the atmosphere to become unguided missles. Most folks, when rebuilding a pto bypass the launch cycle by not installing them to begin with.
This may or may not be the source of your noise but that is why Coop was asking about engaged/disengaged. |

Well the sound came back when the PTO was disengaged after mowing seems to go away when PTO is engaged. To be honest, this day has got the best of me and I'm frustrated with this tractor. I now have small amount of smoke on start up(i'm use to that) but when you throttle up it seems to bog down for a second then throttle and blows more smoke. Going to check the plug tomorrow as I did not change it after the blown gasket but other than that i'm not sure where to look aside from just completely rebuilding the motor which I really don't have the time for right now. Thanks.

I figure it is but I can't ever seem to adjust this carb to a happy spot. I was searching the forum earlier and found something about using the choke at WOT to determine if it is a lean issue. Will try that tomorrow but definitely going to clean or replace the plug.

Watched the video, not sure about the noise could be pto rattle being that it goes away when engaged, I've had the bolt that holds the gen bracket behind the starter pulley come loose and back out to where it starts grinding and banging on the pulley especially if the pulley got some bends from being pried off. Has nothing to do with the noise but if you replaced the head gasket it's always a good idea to re torque the bolts after its been run a while or maybe you've already done !

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
