My 982 is having a problem with the hydro. When you are going forward and pull the lever back to go in reverse it continues to go forward for a bit and then slowly into reverse. This happens going from reverse to forward also. This has been sitting for a while now but had always worked good until the other day. Could this be the check valves or relief valves just needing cleaning? I read to soak them in solvent, would brake/parts cleaner do the job?
I have some valves from a 149 that are known to be good. Will these fit? The 982 has the auto valves and the 149 has the button. Would they work just the same?

If the valves are not the auto type they have to have some way to be depressed to get the pressure off so you can "free wheel" it around. That's the big difference. I don't know if you could fab anything up like the flipper the 149 has without cutting into your 982, and I wouldn't want to do that...

You could use the manuals temporarily just to see if there's a change in your problem.

Could this be part of the problem? The trunion and cam plate aren't centered.
aagitch, I will try the other valves I have to see if that helps, if it does then I will know what I need to do. I've had this tractor for a while now but just haven't taken the time to get it back in shape. Can't decide if to sell it or keep it, I really want an 1872.

Sorry, pics didn't load first time.
Also, note the homemade end buttons on the springs. I have a new set of springs and buttons to install.

I think you will notice a big difference in the way your hydro operates when you put the new springs and pins in. It also looks like your trunion is worn. There are plenty of threads on this site that address that. I would replace the pins and fix the trunion, then adjust for neutral. If that doesn't work, you may have to adjust your linkage a little bit. It takes some time but it should fix your issue. Make sure you download the service manual or purchase one from Binder Books (link at the top of the page). It will help you thru the process.
If you are looking to get rid of a running 982, there should be plenty of takers!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
