Im having some trouble with wobbling steering with my 125. I am able to turn the wheel and steer normally while operating the tractor but the cam tube (the portion that goes into the steering column tube assembly) wobbles if I move it back and forth.
I read about rebuilding the steering boxes and Im hoping I dont have to learn how to do that at this time. Is there simply something I need to tighten? I know there is that adjusting plug that has the cotter pin installed.... could that be the adjustment point I need to look at? If someone could point me in the right direction, I would apreciate it. I have a copy of the service manual of course. Thanks! |

Is there a way to tighten up that cam tube without taking it all apart? |

I'm trying to figure out what you call a cam tube??
![]() Go to the Cub Cadet Parts and Service link in the header above and and look at the parts diagram of the steering assembly for your tractor and tell us what that part is you are calling a cam tube.

I think he is referring to the tube that houses the upper bearing and steering shaft proper.
It's a friction fit in the gear housing and over the years it becomes somewhat loose. I suppose one could shoot a couple short screws through the upper portion of the housing into the tube itself. be much easier if the assembly were outbof the tractor though. |

i meant to say "cam AND tube"... thats how the service manual refers to it I think. Its the shaft that the steering wheel attaches too. I guess I am out of luck then and will have to rebuild.... I was hoping that plug with the cotterpin was what tightened it all up.

If you mean by "wobble" that the steering wheel is moving around in all directions, adjusting the "plug" may remove some up and down movement but it won't do anything for 360 degree movement. That is usually the result of worn bushings/bearings at the top of part #14 OR part number 14 is loose at the bottom in the aluminum casting, as finsruskw pointed out.
To work on the unit there is no escaping that you have to get the steering wheel off. There are plenty threads here on how to do that. Once that is done, disconnect your linkage, remove the two bolts holding the box to the frame, and slide the hole unit out through the bottom of the tractor. You will have to have the tractor raised up very high to do that so be careful. |

Got a closer look this morning and finsruskw was right...
The tube assembly #14 has slid down, the steering wheel is no longer supported by the tube so it wobbles. At some point in history, someone tried to glue or caulk it into place. Not as bad as I thought, dont have to rebuild yet. |

Thats a great idea George, I will certainly give that a try before inserting screws. Im glad I didnt start taking it apart yet because after pushing it back up into the steering wheel, its now holding firm. Hopefully it continues to hold, thanks Finsruskw for mentioning it.
I didnt see that bushing (#2 in the parts list). Is that inside the steering wheel? |
