My 149 PTO is always engaged. I plan on buying a wear button, thrust button, and two throw out levers from a local Cub dealer. Should I do anything else at this time? Should I have a third throw out lever? The diagram shows one and I have two.
Finally, this IS a type "A" PTO, correct? ![]() |

Depending on serial numbers of your 149 your PTO should be either B or B with brake. This PTO you have looks like a B (without brake).
https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/showthread.php?t=9 Sponsors above have the parts. Cub Cadet service and parts look up has nearly everything you need but maybe it might be best to buy a rebuilt/refurbished. Don't forget the bearing and the thrust button.

There are three throw out levers.
In addition to what you listed, you will need the screw(26), spring(24), and two nuts(23) for the third lever. While you're waiting for parts you should be soaking the Allen screw holes in the pulley with penetrating oil. |

My PTO works fine for now, but I wouldn't be surprised if more stuff breaks on it if I tear it apart. |

I would not run that PTO as there will be more damage, especially to the PTO thrust lever.

I'm pretty sure that PTO you pictured looks like a B type but maybe I'm wrong. Perhaps some else can chime in. I have an A type in my 125 and I can see the differences.

It is a B Type with a PTO fingers that are long gone. It may be one with or had a brake style pto, serial # would be 482000 and up.

Interesting. Serial is 404000 and some change. I'm going to assume it has had an engine swap at some point.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
