Default Starter/generator discharging

Hello

I inherited a Cub Cadet 105 from my uncle a few years ago. It always has electrical issues and I need to charge the battery after each use. I finally got around to investigating the issue and the starter generator seems to be putting out a negative charge. I have checked the wiring and it all looks good. I put on an extra starter generator and have the same issue. Do I have a voltage regulator problem?

It's possible.

What did you use to determine the generator has a negative charge? What were the readings? Or were you just looking at the volt/amp meter on tractor? And did you polarize the generator(s)? When swapping generators you need to have the right direction as in CW or CCW.

Your generator will not "charge" negative, it will however, show a discharge on the amp meter if it is not charging and the battery will go dead.

I looked at the amp meter and a digital multimeter. I did not polarize the generator, I didn't know that was needed. I got a box of parts from my uncle and I just swapped a new one in.

How do you polarize the generator?

Is the negative battery terminal connected to the tractor frame? Maybe someone hooked the battery up backwards.

I would check the regulator before I made anymore changes. There is a good video on them in the thread below.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
