Does anyone know if Cub Cadet hydro fluid with a reddish color is compatible with the usual honey colored fluid? I may have purchased the fluid some years ago as it was sitting near the back on the shelf. It is in a quart container, same as the newer hydro fluid quart containers.
Typically transmission fluid for cars is a red color. Was Cub Cadet using the traditional automotive type fluid years ago for hydros? Just curious... ![]() |

Back in the day when IH was in business they had red fluid.
they called it Hytran. Also a lot of automatic trans fluid was red. Sundstrand who made the hydros for the cub cadets then also recommended Dexron type "F" was an acceptable fluid for their units. Sundstrand put that hydro into a lot of wheeled equipment, and of course those manufactures recommended their fluid as expected. If you had Deere equipment, of course they recommended their fluid. yada yada. It was said back then that Deere painted their equipment Green, so they could hide in the tall grass as the Big Red powered equipment proudly powered by. Ha,LOL! I know its true because I heard it on rotary party line phones. ![]() |

Since both the honey color and the red color hydro fluid from Cub Cadet came in identical quart containers, with the same numbers, I assume that it shouldn't be a problem topping off my transmission with the red color fluid. I hate to waste a useful bottle of fluid even if it is red! That stuff ain't cheap!!
When you're older and retired with limited resources, I figure "you gotta use what cha got!" Besides, the mixed pink colored fluid might look kinda purdy on the dipstick! ![]() I'll use the Hy-Tran next fluid change... |

OK, here goes the DEAD HORSE again. Just a quick unpaid testimonial for AMSOIL. They currently have 100 percent synthetic 5w-30 tractor hydraulic/transmission fluid for $11.39/quart preferred customer price. Now for the testimonial. In the mid 90s I purchased a Cub cadet 109 from a dealer that had taken it in on trade. Did a test drive/mow and all seemed good. Took it home and it would not pull itself up a slight incline. Tore it apart and found the pistons in both the pump and motor to be sticking due to overheating and varnishing of the oil. Soaked everything in carb cleaner for about a week and put everything back together with all new seals. That was 30 years ago and that little tractor still has the same oil in it with less than a quart of oil added to it over the entire 30 years. Yes it gets used to the tune of around 180 hrs per year mowing and blowing snow in northern Minnesota with a CCC 341 blower. Always kept inside in an unheated garage and never fails to start on its own unless temps fall below -20 outdoor temp. With the friction modifiers and seal conditioners AMSOIL puts in their oil I have no leaks after in excess of 5000 hrs.
AMSOIL is TOO EXPENSIVE ! I think not !!! |

Amsoil makes great lubricants! Nice to know they are putting out some hydro fluid that gives Cub Cadet a little competition when it comes to cost. At just a little over half the price, you can't go wrong with it. Probably a better product as well.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
