Engine surge when blades engaged

I have an XT1 LT46 that developed a weird problem. I mowed the front half of my yard, edged, trimmed and went back over to bag the clippings. Parked it to blow off the driveway. When I went to start it to move to the back yard, it wouldn’t start. Said battery was low.

I jumped it and get it running, and let it idle a bit. It idles fine. Then I went to engage the blades, and it almost stalled and started to idle low. With the blades engaged it’s just surging at low rpm.

If I disengage the blades, it goes back to a smooth high idle, then surging if I try to engage the blades. I did find that it will start surging after I move the lever only an inch or so down. I don’t have to have the lever all the way.

I parked it in the shed, and turned it off, and it won’t turn on. Could the battery cause this issue? Or some sort of charging problem? I’ve never had an issue up until now, minus the starter snapping in half.
