Default My 124 is broken.....before I open up the trans...

Been plowing snow like a champ. Thursday nite I changed the gear oil.
I just cleared a spot next to the wood pile, and it's stuck in reverse.
If I put it where reverse or 2nd gear should be...it does nothing, where 1st, and 3rd are, or neutral...it's in reverse
I haven't been into the trans before. So, am I looking at a broken part that is weldable, or needs replacing?
Just need opinion before I spend time taking it apart....we're supposed to get more snow, so the blade will go on the 122 if I'm looking at something involved.

Does the shifter spin and flop around all over the place, or does it move normally? If it flops around, the shifter is broken, and if it acts normally, the shift fork is probably broken. Be careful you don't get it into two gears while you're playing around trying to figure out which it is, or you may have a lot of other things to replace while you are in there.

Edit: Didn't answer half your question. Both are weldable.

Thanks Matt. Yes, it goes into all the gates normally, just doesn't come out of reverse, so it's the fork.
Is it cast, or steel?
I guess it doesn't matter, need to take the rear out, and disassemble. I'll have to bring it to work to weld it.

My 100 was like that. The shift forks were just bent/ stretched open. I just squeezed them back In with a channel lock. It probly weekend em but I have another trannĂ½ if they fail

I swapped the blade over to the 122....better because it has hydro lift anyways. Then, I backed it up, all the way from the rear of the property to the garage. I'll slit it another day, and open her up.

Ok, I pulled the seat mount plate off, and pulled the gearshift lever a couple weeks ago.
The right side (looking down) gate was loose, and cracked. I repositioned the gates, and snugged them up good.

I am assuming the transaxle needs to be removed and fully disassembled to repair it.

Am I correct? I put it all back together, and have just been very gentle with changing gears. But, I know it won't last long like this.

If you don't have a manual, you need to get one...purchase one from Binder Books, or download one from the OCC Tech Library.

To describe what you have to do to make this repair, would require someone to type for a very, very long time, let alone scan their manual, and post this info for you..............

If you don't get the shifting issue fixed properly -soon- you risk breaking parts, that then drop down into the gears. Once that happens, you are going to have to split the tractor, and do MAJOR repairs, and parts/gears replacement, plus fix what the original problem was.
I understand that Wild Bill, thanks for the concern. But, it is fine, just not 100%. I've got all the manuals, just haven't gone through the needed section yet, because it's 19F in my garage, I've got the 122 working fine, and it' not a priority. I'm just wondering if I NEED to tp split the chassis...I guess I do.
