Default More timing questions

My K301 was backfiring thru the carb and had no power when throttled up so I picked up new points and condenser.
I wanted to do static timing so I printed off the PDF that someone had put together. I had to expose the flywheel to clean off the T and S marks but that worked out well.
I'm confused about actual setting of the timing. When I turn over the engine by hand and the points start opening as shown on the multimeter I'm no where close to the S in the sight hole. If I set the points at 0.020 when the S is in the sight hole there is no spark.
I tried setting the points at 0.020 when the pushrod was fully extended and the engine runs.
I know I'm missing something in the instructions bur just not sure what.

While the tractor is running now I'd like to know it is timed correctly.

By Gap..

Set your points to somewhere between .015 to .020 of an inch and see where it runs best.


By VOM or DVM..

Attach one lead on the Motor Ground and the other on the "screw terminal" of the points. Points are closed. Adjust the points to where they just begin to open at the "S" mark on the flywheel in relationship to the sight hole.

The gap of the points is how you adjust the timing. You are probably not going to end up on .020 If you hook up a timing light and watch the mark on the flywheel, Slightly opening or closing the gap will make the timing mark vary up and down just like turning the distributor on an old car engine. One of mine is at .013 and one is at .016
0.20 will usually make them run. But you can dial them in closer from there.

I prefer to use VOM guide that MattG posted. I have a timing light and I still like the VOM. Timing light or VOM is going to give you better results them setting points to .020

Default Timing

I was never able to find a sight hole in the fan shroud on my K321. After disassembly I find its not a hole in the shroud, its in the back plate behind the flywheel.
Its right under the Starter/generator mount.

The S and T marks are on the back of the flywheel and not on the side like I thought they were.

I set my points with the engine running. I have not tried to do it with a timing light. Full trottle and set the points to where the engine sounds best. Always worked for me. And the point gap is never around .020 but like .013 to .015. I should check to see where the s is on the flywheel. Maybe tomorrow.

For the record I had the take off the drive shaft and remove the flywheel cover to clean up and paint the timing marks. It would have been easier to pull the motor out but I was being stubborn.

I had to pull my engine and do the same thing so I could see the timing marks. Now Allen will be all set if he ever has to reset the timing.
