982 no spark
I have a 982 with the original onan engine. I went to take it out of storage and it started for about 10 seconds then shut off. I sprayed a little starting fluid and it wouldn't fire. I checked for spark and there is none. Any Suggestions of where to start would be appreciated.
Thanks, Earl

There are safety switches (seat, PTO, relay) and there's the key switch. You need to track to the point of break.

Finally had time to look at it. There are 12 volts going to the coil. So i would guess that it would have to be the coil because that is the last thing before the spark plug besides the plug wires. Does that sound correct? Any way to test coil? IF i can find one im sure its going to be expensive and i would like to be sure before i buy it.

Here is the free manual from our Tech Section. Look on page 3-9 for testing.

Well , you also need the points to make contact to trigger the spark discharge through the plug. Have you cleaned the points? I'd surely do that before replacing a coil, since it's free to do.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
