Default Been a while....GT2544

Hey folks!

Been a while since I posted because I was out of Cubs. That was until a buddy gave me this unfortunate 2544. He hauled it to me and the price was ah hem, free.

Turns over, no fire yet. Pulled the deck. Owner said it was chewing up deck belts. Found some odd piece of flat metal bolted in near one idler. It will be a slow but hopefully cheap resurrection for the kids to use.

So, I am back down loading manuals and formulating a fixit game plan.

Anything to watch out for on these models? I never had one of these. Tires are oddly scalped hard on outer half of tread.

Looks like a wheel alignment will fix tyre problem
That odd bit of metal looks like a dodgy fix on the belt tensioner pulley
There was a recall kit back aways for the tensioner most probably out of date now
I have a GT2550 if I can be of any further help

This generation of 2000 Series was known for hood failure - exhaust would melt the grille. Otherwise, they are basically the same tractor as the previous generation that had metal side panels.

They have a stout transmission, solid driveline, all of them came with Command twins and 44, 48, or 54 decks. They are a reliable unit with basic maintenance and care. I find they are a very low-drama machine to own.

I would check the steering gear and pinion, make sure a lot of debris isn't packed in there and make sure to grease it. Many people miss this area. It also can cause problems with the forward and reverse pedal linkage if not cleaned out. There is basically a tray that holds debris behind the engine.

Justin,

Thanks for the insight. I won't do anything with it until spring. Hoping just all fluid and filters for engine and transmition. Probably a battery. It does steer mean. That will need a discerning eye to look for wear.

In Australia we only got the GT2544 = 44 inch deck and the GT2550 = 50 inch deck

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
