Default 1862 steering to 1863 fit

Hi guys its been awhile since I've been here I hope all are doing well ! My last post were about the time I obtained a 1863 and the question is about that same tractor. I have a chance to pick up a 1862 for parts what I wanted to do was install the power steering onto my 1863 can you tell me if its a direct bolt on? Also the 1862 has the 18 hp magnum not running what do you suppose that is worth? is 250.00 a good price for a parts tractor minus the deck, mule drive, rear end?

1811Woody,

I did the PS conversion on my 1541. At the same time I converted the front axle assembly to the version on the 1863/4. The change is pretty easy. All the needed parts may on the 1862 (assuming it is complete). You may have to get different lines that come out of the charge pump. I don't have the 1863 in my parts book so I don't know if the pump is the same. The 1862 and 1864 do have the same pump in the book I have. Should not be too expensive if do need them.

You will most likely have to remove the dash tower. I would do it no matter what just to make the needed room to do everything right. Check the ball ends on the PS cylinder, they do wear out.

$250 for the PS alone is an OK deal. That is usually what they get on eBay for that.

An 1863 has a Hydro-Gear pump and I don't know if that will cause a problem or not.

Ok thanks guys I guess I thought if I had the steering column /box and the lines and cylinder it would be a direct bolt up. The 1863 already has the hydraulic lift so I figured it would have the same pump. Now I'm nervous about buying the parts tractor.

I think it would work. If you already have the hydro lift it should be able to run the steering.

You can't go wrong if the parts tractor is $250. You can sell the PS parts for that much. I did some looking at the 1863 vs the 1864 and it looks like the conversion is more complicated then I thought. The two models use different pumps that have different plumbing for the hydro lines. The conversion can be done. But it would require fabricating new hydro connections from the pump to the PS unit. Personally I would do it if I was in your position. PS is a great feature in my book, especially for snow throwing. Having the 1862 pump would make this a lot easier of course.

Maybe some of the other members can help. I do not know the 1863 that well.

Hello: I’m new here and recently bought a old 1541 Cub Cadet. How many parts do I need to buy, in order to make the power steering complete setup off of a 1864 Cub Cadet, work?

All the steering components. The steering column, steering wheel to valve. The steering cylinder and brackets. The front axle would be good to get too. Get all the hydro lines from the 1864 and use what you need. Sometimes you can find someone selling the complete system online. The sponsors at the top will know what you need as well.

What is the serial number of your 1541? At 816,509 and above they switched to Hydro-Gear transmissions. The 1864 uses the Sunstrand transmission and the lines will be different.
