Default KT-17 not running

I need your guys help, it might seem like a dumb question. The other day I was mowing my yard engine was running perfect. I always blow the engine off with my air compressor after mowing the yard. While the engine was idling while I was doing this process, all of a sudden it just died. I cannot get it to start up for anything. Engine turns over just fine. I don't know what direction to go? If it is the coil can I buy a coil from an automotive store? I smell gas while I'm cranking it, I even choke it and it still doesn't start. I believe it to be a firing problem at this point. I did buy two new plugs and I'm going to try that to see if they fire. Points are opening and closing just fine with no corrosion, would a condenser do such a thing? At this point it could be the plugs, the coil, or the condenser... Thanks

It most likely will evolve around your Ignition Coil.

It will be either..

(A) No input (12VDC) to the coil
or
(B) The Ignition coil is bad.

I would suggest you NOT run out and shotgun purchase a bunch of parts but rather speed the time to diagnose the actual problem.

You make NO mention of the model of tractor you are working. Would we be correct in assuming it is a 682/782..???

Yes, you are correct a 782. The plugs I bought just because the other ones were really really black and I don't know how long they've been in there to tell you the truth. And were only $2. I kind of figured it was the coil. Do I have to spend the $100 to get a replacement coil or are there automotive coils that would work? Of course I'm going to check the voltage on both sides of the coil before I make my decision.

The coil is Kohler specific. You may be able to get it at a parts store, but not just any ol' coil will work, no.

Like Roland said, check the voltage to the coil. Being that it just died, I'd be more willing to think electrical. If your getting voltage to the coil, but no spark, check the points. No a condenser wouldn't do that. But if point replacement is necessary, replace the condenser too.

Go to the Technical Library Section and on page 5 find the correct 782 wiring diagram. Check that you have 12VDC at the Ignition Coil.
