2284 hydro issues
My 2284 hydro is still not behaving as it should. To update, tore the rear down this past winter and replaced an axle bearing, drilled case, obviously new gaskets, filter, oil, and even serviced the driveline. (I use Cadet filters and Deere oil). The old fluid was dark and smelled bad. I say this as a point of suspicion, this machine has had a lot of areas of neglect before I got it. I fought pretty hard to get the "slow reverse" issue fixed (its tolerable now). Don't recall any lost motion/worn linkages that I didn't address.
The current issue is that ground speed varies badly. Don't start blabbing it's not cruise control, this one doesn't behave as it should. You have to mow with your hand on the hydro lever. Turn down hill, it gets too fast, turn up hill, the speed may cut in 1/2. Take off on flat ground, its slow to accelerate--you stop moving the lever and the hydro catches up slowly. Turn the steering wheel sharp when making a slow turn, gets really slow. So what to do now. Is it possible a relief valve issue? I honestly don't know what those do. Is it an issue with the pump itself? I've been into one of those to repair the input shaft. Whole lot of expensive stuff in there, not thinking its worth rebuilding all of that. Any easy place to hook up a gauge and go mow a while and see what's going on? Is it just slop in linkages that I just missed? I doubt its related, but there is still weirdness going on with the steering, the steering wheel wanders. It doesn't seem as bad as when I got it. Kind of figured the valve needs rebuilding eventually. Hoping to get this one as good as the 2072 and 1811.

John the service manual in the files section on Cub Cadet Cyclops on FB explains the test procedure. I doubt that the valves are the issue. They only function to allow the fluid in the pump to change direction. They are not pressure relief valves.
As far as the wandering steering goes the "Pump" AKA control valve and the ram are your most likely problem areas. I assume you have adjusted and corrected the areas of wear such as the axle snubber bolts. As I mentioned last year my 1864 had a case of the wanders and I dumped a bottle of Bars Leak seal repair in the trans. It helped my steering, still not perfect but good enough that I can live with it. Link to the original post. https://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/...ad.php?t=53392

Thanks Sam!! Forgot all about having access to the service manual!!! I'll probably live with it for the summer. Really like that machine the more I run it. Its a nice pairing with all that HP and a 54" deck. Slowly getting all the bugs out. Have to admit, it mows the nicest looking yard out of all my Cadets.

Already replaced. I change out the springs and buttons any time I have one apart. The slot looked pretty good on this one as well. Didn't see any reason to weld it up. Linkages looked reasonable as well.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
