Courage V twin
I have a 25 HP Kohler courage V twin vertical shaft engine in a Cub Cadet.
Model # SV730-0011 Ser # 3608135143 The problem is the starter wont turn it past the compression stroke. I have adjusted the valves to specs, installed a bigger CCA battery. The engine has about 700 hrs on it and runs great but I have to use a jump starter to crank it over, It has been this way since the first 100 hrs. I have been told it may be the compression release on the camshaft.Does anyone have any input on this problem, or know of any Kohler updates pertaining to this. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank to all, Jim |

Courage V twin
I just looked at these posts and the only one I haven't done is pull and disassemble the starter. All grounds and cables connections are good. I did have a loose cable on the solenoid and it had gotten pretty warm at some point last year. The solenoid has been replaced and still the same problem. Parts Tree shows no compression release and even the camshaft is not available anymore.
Some of the pulling Cubs use an automotive starter conversion on their high compression engines. They use a Toyota Camry starter but it may not work on my engine. Thank you for the help. |

Yes, it does have considerable compression.
All cables and connections are good. I kind of think I'm looking at a broken compression release [ if it has one ] or an internal starter problem. |

Then how do you explain it cranking good with a jumper battery?

I'm betting on a bad starter.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
