1711 Drive Line Repair
Well mowing season is over with, so while it is not butt freezing cold out, I figured I would get a head start on repairs for my 1711. I already new the drive line was in need of replacing, but had no real idea how bad it was till today.
I started out getting the bolts removed from the flex discs and move the motor forward to get the drive shaft out. Then I pulled the flywheel to drive shaft Flange. Yeah, there was supposed to be a ball bushing in there. Absolutely no sign of it anywhere. This was all that was there. It needs this in it to be good, but as you can see it's toast. I'll be placing a wanted add for this. Then I removed the rear yoke and well of course it wasn't much better The bushing popped right out without a problem, of course. But the collar was not budging. I cut a small piece of flat stock I had lying around and borrowed the neighbors $100 Harbor Freight Mig and tacked the stock into the bevel of the collar. A couple wacks with the hammer and a drift and it popped right out. Pressed in the new bushing and now at least the rear yoke is ready to go back in.

Well you are probably wondering what the drive shaft looks like huh? LOL it's toast too. Time for a new one.
Flywheel end: Transmission end: That's the extent of today's fun.

Yep, it served it's purpose and still ran great in this condition, just a small amount of vibration.

Yepper,
Looks like you were able to milk that till the end. I'm really suprised you didn't have anymore vibration than you did. OK, I'll ask: What's the story with the bandaid wrapper.

LOL, While driving the coil pin out, I caught my thumb between the hammer and drift and had a heck of a blood blister. Got out the old knife and drained the blood and wrapped it up with a band aide.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
