Getting ready to put a for sale sign on the 104 (problems)
I should have just let the thing smoke. Ugh any help troubleshooting this would be appreciated. Here is what is going on
Fuel leaks out of air cleaner (need to pull it and check the float that should be an easy one) Governor doesn't seem to be working properly at full throttle Engine seems to run extremely hot. Engine backfires at high rpm after getting hot. Eventually sputters and stalls and is hard to restart. Has issues running full rpm with the deck on So far I have adjusted the points and rechecked about 10times. Going to grab my dad's timing light this weekend and see if they need to be tweaked. I've adjusted the carb a little on the rich side but that didn't help the running hot issue. Wiring harness is brand new. I just want to cut my grass and not have to push mow it for over an hour and a half. I'm sure I could sell this for enough that I could buy a running grass cutter

What are you gapping your points at? What did you do to get to this point? Is this a fresh rebuild or something? Carb issue could be your needle and seat which could be causing some of your other troubles.

Just got done taking the carb apart and then mowing. Backfiring was reduced but it still does it when the load changes on the engine (going down hill, pushing the clutch in ect)
I rebuilt the engine because it was smoking and the head gasket was blown. I fixed the fuel running out the carb the no rev with the pto on and hard starting by blowing out the carb and clearing the gunk from the needle seat.

I'd keep the gap at .020 to .021 are you sure you set the governor arm correctly? I would reset the points and adjust the carb according to the manual. If you rebuilt the engine your carb setting can be very different.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
