Cub Cadet 2135 surging
Good morning/afternoon
New to the forum and new to riding mowers/tractors. I recently grabbed (a week ago) a used 2135 with 43 hours on it. It was sitting for a several years then brought back to life by previous owner before selling. They put on a new carb, oil change, new plug. The cub took several cranks and playing with the choke to get it started, roughly 15 seconds of cranking. I emptied the tank, put in ethanol free gas and replaced the fuel filter. Still has the same cranking issue. But when it fired up it ran like a champ. But every time you started, hot or cold it would crank for 15 seconds and require some playing with the choke. Me being a tinkerer I decided to adjust the low idle speed screw as per manufacturers recommendation, but without any way to confirm RPMs other than by ear. Since doing this the cub has been surging when it gets above 1/2 way on the throttle. I have tried adjusting it back but with no luck so far. Any suggestions on the surging? Hints, tips, tricks? Totally at a loss right now. |

First, welcome to OCC.............
Try adjusting your High Speed Idle, on the Carb, on the "rich" side. See if it smooths out.

Sadly only 1 screw on the carb. I did choke it a little with the throttle high and it runs like a champ again. Will stick with that until new fuel pump and hoses arrive.

I am guessing I have a fuel delivery issue, pump is on order, hoping that fixes both the surging issue and the long cranking sessions to get it started

Update: I changed the fuel pump, put in an E3 spark plug and gapped according to spec.
Still have to choke it at full throttle. Still cranks for a while and requires a few different choke positions in order to turn over Any ideas on what I can try next? Totally at a loss here |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
