The thing just caught fire on me while mowing. All of the work I put into it this spring just literally went up in smoke. I just had it running great too. As a matter of fact, half way through mowing, I thought " This tractor is awesome running". Now I must wait for my home owners insurance adjuster.

Havent figured it out yet. I seems like it started between the carb and engine block. I haven't torn it down yet until the adjuster gets here. I have new equipment replacement on my insurance. They are bawking at the fact that a new one costs upward of $4000. They can't justify it for a 1989 Cub, even though my policy says they must replace it with new. I told them I wasn't looking for a new one. I would take the equivelent to what I have. We are hashing out figures, But they know I will replace it with an older one. They are happy and I should get plenty of cash to buy a nice 82 series. I think i let them off the hook easy. It is funny how you can pay a premium for insurance, yet when you need to use it, they treat you like a thief. I will know more tomorrow.

That isn't as bad as I thought it would look. That would be very fixable with a few new parts.

Don't give in!
I'd search for a clean 82 series now to show them what you need to replace it. Do not let them replace it with a Box store Cub. Make sure it is at least a 2000 series if they go new. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
