Because it is a CCC(MTD) not an IH. The 782D's were built in '84 & '85, after IH sold to CCC in '81. The 782D was made by CCC to be sold by IH dealers, it's yellow and white twin was the 882 sold thru CC dealers.

No worries, the aluminum rear end internals are said to be every bit as robust as their cast iron predecessors....they're just lighter.

When I cleaned out the rear drive on my 882, it looked like it was brand new and ready for another 40 years.

The AL's internals are as robust or more robust, but I guarantee the AL case isn't. I have two broken AL cases sitting in my shop.

The 982 could have either a CI rear, if below SN 720,000, or an AL rear, if at or above SN 720,000. What years were they made?

The 982's can be both CCC or IH. SN <700000 were IH with the cast iron rear end. SN 700000-720000 were CCC with cast iron rear end and the ones above 720000 were CCC with the Alum rear end.

To make it more complex, even 782's with cast rears can be CCC built regardless if they're red or yellow/white.

Yep some of the lucky first few 782's that CCC built got the left over CI rear's and front axles. Mine is one of those. It is CCC built with CI IH rear and front axle.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
