K301 Questions?
I pulled the head and pan off a K-301 that came out of a Quietline 1200.
The engine had a hard time running, like it had low compression, before I took it out. The bore is perfect. There seems to be about 0.005" slop between the piston and bore, is that normal?  I can easily move the piston side to side.Can the bore be too smooth? It is so slick I would almost worry about new rings seating. I can not find any mark on the top of the piston, is that typical? I would bet Duke $20 the pan was never off. There were no balance gears, is that the way some engines came?

You have to hone the bore to install new rings or they will never seat. No marks on top of the piston = standard bore. 5 thou slop between the piston and bore probably isn't too bad (I've seen running engines with worse) but the only way you'll know for sure is to disassemble the engine and measure the wear as per the service manual. Not all engines had balance gears, either.
