Default Pro's and Con's of an 1882

I have found an 1882 not too far from me for sale. I know absolutely nothing about the cyclops Supers or GT's. I do know from some of the posts they have a tendency for electrical issues, of course plastic panels, and crappy paint, if I understand all of that correctly. Now with that understood, what kind of electrical issues are typical and what else should I look at if I check this thing out?

It looks to be in great condition, if the pictures aren't misleading.

DWayne

Personally I like the Cyclops. I don't think the wiring is any worse than the 82 series all in all. Just my 2 cents. I know I'll take some heat for this but I'm not a big fan of the Mag18. Just turned an 1882 into a 2282 with a new CH22 and it's a great tractor. Look through the "Super Day" thread probably about 3 pages back now and you can see pretty much what I did to it.

The wiring just seems to be of poor quality, and it is far more complex than the earlier tractors. There's all kinds of relays and stuff to run the idiot lights.

Make sure the hood doesn't bind when you open or close it. About 90% of the cyclops tractors I have seen do this, and it is either a result or a cause of some of the broken plastic stuff.

Default Pro's and Cons of an 1882

DWayne,

I personally liked my 1882 and the 1864 for that matter very much. Both of them where comfortable to use, and by anyone including my son. The seat is slide adjustable and as well they have tilt wheel. The mag 18 has plenty of power, I used my 1882 too haul the fire wood and the steering brakes worked very well in the loss of traction. I had zero electrical problems with either of them and they had all the saftey switches in use. The plastics, well yes are problematic. The 1882's were cracked, but it did have a loader on it. The 1864 was like new and well taken care of. I did sell both but only too feed the tractor hobby. I would by another anyday.
Hope this helps.

Take care, Mike

Well I talked to the guy that has it. He took it in on trade, does not know any history of it, other than the PO had hit a tree with it and therefore there is some all thread running thru the front to hold the panels on. Other than that he says it runs great and mows great. Will have to think about it.

Dwayne,
I have had excellent success with my 2284. I have had only one electrical issue with a dirty key switch connection. I actually have used my soldering gun to plastic weld some cracks in the plastic. I have my side panels screwed on were the tabs break off. The paint is bad in spots ill agree with that issue. Its a very easy to use comfortable tractor and parts are readily available and reasonable.

My 1861 was kept outside for over 5 years in all kinds of Virginia weather.

The man who gave it to me could not get it running. It had 3 electrical connections that did not make contact.

I had a hard time finding 3 at the same time!!

I store it inside and the 1861 has been flawless for 5 years.

One switch acts a little funny, the tractor will not start if you are not sitting on the seat, but, you should not need to do that very often!!

So I do not feel the tractor has electrical issues. I am happy with it.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
