My 149 seems to have a problem with the engine missing when I am traveling over bumps or rough terrain at full throttle and full speed or half speed. I think I might be running out of fuel? I know that the 149 has a gravity fed fuel system so a checked to make sure the fuel line has a good slant from the tank to the carb. i did install an inline fuel filter could this be hampering delivery too much? Also, I am not a carb guy but would the float bouncing around have something to do with this? I have the carb at the suggested settings and on pavement or smooth surfaces it runs like a bear. I also checked the RPMs at full throttle and I have it set to about 3500 max instead of 3600 because she is old and I dont want to rebuild the engine! Any ideas would be a help. Thanks, mark

are your engine grounds clean and tight? how about the wire from the points to the coil (I guess a bump could cause it to ground out somewhere)?

I checked all the leads and grounds for the engine and they were all tight and clean. Maybe miss isnt the correct term.. Engine sputter?? Mark

Probably fuel sloshing around in the carb. Go slow over bumps problem solved.

shouldn't have to go slow! if it's fuel related and it used to work, I have to opine that there is plenty of vacuum on the engine to pull fuel out of the bowl into the carb throat. But I speak from 1250 experience.
the "bump" makes me wonder whether there is a short on the coil wire from the points (I've learned the hard way to start with the cheap easy stuff). VOM check on the wire to make sure there isn't a section of bare wire somewhere. other people will chime in with how to do that in a case where it may be "intermittent". |

I didn't check the wire from the points to the coil for bare spots. I will do that tomorrow. As far as my plug wire goes it fits both sides nice and tight but it is longer than the oem wire. It is a spare that I had. Now for the float spring, is this add on part or a replacement part? The tractor had done this since I got it running and now I'm trying to work out all the small.issues. thanks, mark

there is a compression spring for this problem ,sits under float kohler #M47422 .hope this helps .David

Does your plug wire snap on to the plug nice and tight or is it loose fitting same with the coil end of the wire.I had a wheelhorse that would sputter or miss when id go over bumps found out the plug wire would jump around on the plug and lose fire to the plug just a thought

the plug wire would be my next choice (and easy enough to pull and do a cont check). if it passes the cont check, spread the coil end and slight crimp on the plug end. a little WD40 on both connections shouldn't hurt anything.
