Here's one for ya:
Got this 782 back from the shop; didn't run right. I tinkered on it and replaced the manifold gaskets, disassembled/cleaned the carb and took the cover off the fuel pump to inspect, everything seemed OK. Mowed the yard and it was running pretty good. At the end of the mowing, I shut the engine down and a huge white plume of smoke came billowing out the front muffler. Not right. Engine wouldn't start again. That was more than a week ago... Day before yesterday, I tried starting it to no avail; ran out of daylight, but did notice that the small engine shop had (IMO) overfilled the crankcase with oil. Yesterday, took the plugs out, they're both dry; drained some of the crankcase oil, removed the air filter/housing to expose the intake of the carb. Sprayed some carb cleaner down in the air intake, pulled the choke and turned the key. After several tries to start (with various choke adjustments and more carb cleaner), it caught and began to run. Within 2 seconds, a huge amount of gasoline-brownish liquid boiled up from the air intake; looked like it was vomiting. Have any of you ever seen such a thing? Did I ruin the fuel pump by taking the cover off to inspect? Is there a leak from the crankcase oil side to the combustion chamber or carb? Where is this crap coming from? I cleaned it up and tried it again. Wouldn't start for several tries, then finally caught and again, same boiling up from the carb. Ugh. Any help you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like fuel leaked into the oil pan ?? Normally the fuel pump is at fault if this happens.
The white smoke may be carb related. Did you try turning the engine over with the plugs out ?? |

Yep. After the first boil over, I cleaned everything up as best I could, removing the plugs as well. Then, while plugs were still out, cranked the engine again. Liquid came shooting out of the spark plug holes; not very much, but more than I'd expect. Came out like a shotgun.
Under normal circumstances, there should not be any liquid coming out those plug holes, just a gas/air vapor from the carb. Right?

Stanton, sounds like the fuel pump. Does the oil smell like it has gas in it? I would change the oil and filter if it has one and bypass the fuel pump and see how it runs.

Yep, that's the correct way to test if it's the fuel pump. If it is, they are pretty cheap and easy to replace.
